Praying Mantis

Q: How can I tell whether a praying mantis is male or female? ANSWER: The female praying mantis is larger and sometimes eats the male after mating. ALSO: Male mantises' wings extend past their abdomen (and they are smaller and have slimmer abdomens - see photo!). Female mantises' wings are shorter and do not extend past their abdomens, and of course their abdomens are much larger to allow for the storage of the ootheca. (Photo by Jeff Gamble).
