In his autobiography, Gardner recounts a memorable conversation with his mother about his future. She told him, “If you want to, one day you could make a million dollars. Since Gardner reasoned that he could not sing, dance or play basketball, doing so was going to require him just being himself. For Gardner who barely completed high school becoming a successful stockbroker would take him through some occupations that each in its own way prepared him for his ultimate success.
