Rothesay Castle, Isle of Bute, Scotland. In 12th c. a keep was built with a wet moat and on a mound with a unique circular plan. Norsemen attacked in 1230 by cutting a hole with axes. In 1263, King Haakon captured it, then defeated in battle and the Stewarts became the keepers.In 1344, it passed between Robert the Bruce and the English with Scots finally having control. In the 15th c. a large rectangular keep and gatehouse were added. In the 19th c. it was rebuilt.
