New record broken! A remote galaxy shining with the light of more than 300 trillion suns has been discovered using data from NASA's Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE). The galaxy is the most luminous galaxy found to date and belongs to a new class of objects recently discovered by WISE -- extremely luminous infrared galaxies, or ELIRGs. An especially photogenic pair of interacting galaxies called Arp 273. The larger of the spiral galaxies, known as UGC 1810, has a disk that is distorted into a rose-like shape by the gravitational tidal pull of the companion galaxy below it | Credit: NASA, ESA, and the Hubble Heritage Team (STScI/AURA) on Flickr | Permission: CC BY 2.0

The Mineral Moon (NASA/JPL) - this mosaic of 53 images was recorded by the Jupiter-bound Galileo spacecraft as it passed near our own large natural satellite in 1992. The pictures were recorded through three spectral filters and combined in an exaggerated false-color scheme to explore the composition of the lunar surface as changes in mineral content produce subtle color differences in reflected light.

The merging Antennae galaxies - As the two galaxies smash together, billions of stars are born, mostly in groups and clusters of stars.

Our entire solar system in this little dot of the Milky Way galaxy. There are around 300,000,000,000 stars in the Milky Way galaxy alone. Each star having possibly one or more planets in orbit.
