The Sama-veda, is second of the four Vedas, and it ranks next in sanctity and liturgical importance to the Rig-veda. It is a collection of hymns, portions of hymns, and detached verses, primarily taken from the Sakala Sakha of the Rig-veda. They are to be sung, using specifically indicated melodies, by Udgatar priests at sacrifices in which the juice of the Soma plant is offered in libation to various deities. It is said that if the Rig-Veda is the knowledge, Sama-Veda is its realization.
