Teatro Nacional de São Carlos (Opera house) in Lisbon, Portugal -- opened in 1793 by Queen Maria I to replace the Tejo Opera House (destroyed in the 1755 Lisbon earthquake). It was designed by architect José da Costa e Silva, with neoclassical and rococo features & inspired by inspired the Italian theatres the San Carlo of Naples and La Scala in Milan. It was named after Princess Charlotte of Spain, who arrived in 1790 to marry the future king, Prince John. [1st of two pins]

The São Carlos National Theatre opened on June 30th, 1793 and is still today the only Portuguese national theatre devoted solely to the production and presentation of opera and symphonic music.
