Josina Mutemba Machel (1945 - 1971) was a revolutionary Mozambican fighter for FRELIMO (Mozambican Liberation Front) who like thousands of women fought for independence for her country. In 1970, at the age of 24, Josina began to experience stomach pains and was eventually diagnosed with liver cancer. She died on April 7, a day celebrated as National Women’s Day in Mozambique.
