Narcissus by Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio. This is another painting of Narcissus, and I think it is a very powerful one. The painting is very dramatic, and portrays Narcissus in a darker light. There are no etherial elements in this painting that would lighten the image up. It is very dark, and portrays his narcissism as more of a bad thing.
More savage than Caravaggio: the woman who took revenge in oil Artemisia Gentileschi turned the horrors of her own life – repression, injustice, rape – into brutal biblical paintings that were also a war cry for oppressed women. Why has her extraordinary genius been overlooked?
Sacred Love Versus Profane Love (1602–03) by Giovanni Baglione. Intended as an attack on his hated enemy, the artist Caravaggio, it shows a boy (hinting at Caravaggio's homosexuality) on one side, a devil with Caravaggio's face on the other, and between an angel representing pure, meaning non-erotic, love.
