. St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross, OCD, Edith Stein, was a German Jewish philosopher who converted to the Roman Catholic Church and became a Discalced Carmelite nun. Patron saint: Europe; loss of parents; converted Jews; martyrs; World Youth Day. Feast day: 9 August
St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross (Edith Stein) was a brilliant philosopher. She stopped believing in God at 14. Through study of philosophy she grew into a woman of integrity and intelligence, following the truth wherever it led her. She came across the autobiography of St. Teresa of Avila, which she read all in one night, and upon finishing exclaimed, “This is the Truth!” This began a spiritual journey that led to her to being baptized Catholic. She later became a Carmelite nun.
