Pele Roars ~ { Pay-Lay the volcano goddess) | A massive explosion takes place at the base of the plume where molten lava is pumping into the ocean on the Island of Hawaii. The plume is comprised of steam, sulfur dioxide, glass particles, ash, rock, and black sand. As the molten lava pours out of the lava tubes that carried it from magma chambers under the flanks of Mauna Loa volcano above, it instantly explodes into black sand and rock fragments. Coastal Lava Fountain - Huge lava explosions and lava bubbles fountaining in the air. My photography partner, Bruce Omori is up close on the right side with his LCD showing. Some of these explosions were at least 500-700 feet high. Being a novice photographer back then only makes me wish I knew what I know now to help with the shooting. It is what it is. Maybe one day Pele will show case another fountain. Aloha

Islands in the Stream - I am very fortunate to experience one of the most active volcanos on the planet right here in our back yard. Pele is apart of our culture and has been apart of my life as a Native Hawaiian. I visit her with much respect and practice every protocol to be accepted and thankful for the opportunity. Its not about going out there to capture her beauty but to connect and gain an experience that only a few could ever imagine. I am also very fortunate to be able to…

Getting Closer to Pele, The Fire Goddess. - We would be hiking out from shooting the lava fields about this time back in the days. Pele, The Fire Goddess is still at calm. Getting this close can send your heart pumping hard and especially when you don't know whats going on beneath you. The heat is so intense that I could only take one or two shots after composing. Forgot my ND and so needed to up my aperture. Shooting with my 17-40. Aloha

Pele's Destination - Shot taken back in 2012. Ocean lava entry point in Kalapana. Lava is now flowing in Pahoa and is fairly active. Shooting access is not available. Police, DLNR, Civil Defense, and the military got activated to enforce. Sad to think we can't go in to document History but that seems to be the case. Aloha

Magmatic gas escapes from the lava lake and creates spectacular fountains. The liquid lava is thrown many meters into the air, bursting into thousands of fragments. When liquid pieces are torn by the expanding escaping gas, lava is often torn into thin glassy threads, so-called Pele's hair. (Photo: Tom Pfeiffer)

Obsidian Arrowhead and Sterling Silver Pendant-- This pendant is an instant favorite and is named after the Hawaiian goddess of volcanoes and fire. I set this obsidian carved arrowhead in sterling silver, gave the shank a hammered texture and oxidized it to bring out the details. Pele measures just over an inch. Obsidian is volcanic lava cooled quickly. It is a natural glass. A stone of protection, is was probably one the first stones to be used for arrowheads and knives. A stone of…
