Vila Nova de Gaia, Home to Port Wine Producers and Tasting Rooms - by James Martin, About.com Europe Travel | Vila Nova de Gaia is just across the Douro River from Porto (Oporto). This is the real Port Wine town; it's where the lodges of the historic port wine producers are strung out along the "ribeira" or waterfront with their caves, aging tanks and tasting rooms... Vinho verde/green wine: is a Portuguese wine that has its origins in the north of the country - Minho. The literal translation is green wine, but it's actually means that it's a young wine - it may be red, white or rosé, and it is meant to be consumed within a year of bottling. In the summer, served really fresh, it's heaven! The most known brand is Casal Garcia, but if you have the chance, spend a couple more euros (and it's really just a couple) and try nicer brands like this one.
