Later photographed by Richard Avedon, Lily Cushing, at 18, already has the hallmarks of great beauty - wonderful features, spun-gold hair and height, apparently a trait of the upper crust Cushing family. When this portrait by Horst was published in a 1962 issue of Vogue, she was a student at Sarah Lawrence College, outside New York City. In the May 2015 House Beautiful, her profile by Avedon hangs on a wall in the apartment of older sister, designer Justine Cushing.
The first in a series of portraits by Richard Avedon, published in the March 15, 1962, edition of Harper's Bazaar. Virginia Hutton wears a coat-dress of clustering white lace cabbage roses. The daughter of Consuelo Vanderbilt Earl - a prodigal, four-times married heiress who died in 2011 at age 107 - Hutton was a descendent of the other Consuelo who, for a time, was the extremely miserable Duchess of Marlborough and, when she returned home, a doyenne of American society.
