This is an excellent example of one of the earliest forms of writing, cuneiform. At it's earliest stage, writing consisted of pictures that represented the very thing it stood for. As time went on, these images, or pictographs, evolved to not only represent an object, but sounds as well. The designs began to become more abstract as time went on. A clear pictograph of a bird may have changed into a few short lines. Nonetheless, this was a huge advancement in writing.
