The Divine Comedy: Illustrations by Gustave Doré Purgatorio, Canto 30: Beatrice among the angels Although the veil, that from her head descended, Encircled with the foliage of Minerva, Did not permit her to appear distinctly, In attitude still royally majestic Continued she, like unto one who speaks, And keeps his warmest utterance in reserve: “Look at me well; in sooth I’m Beatrice! How didst thou deign to come unto the Mountain? Didst thou not know that man is happy here?”
The crew of 28 were found frozen in their quarters, and the captain upright at his table, his wife, a seaman, and a small boy nearby. The ship’s log showed that it left London on Sept. 10, 1761, bound for China by way of Cape Horn. The last log entry was dated Nov. 11, 1762 , and put the ship in the Arctic Ocean north of Point Barrow, Alaska.
