What is a wishing rock? It's a rock with a single perfectly unbroken stripe all the way around the circumference of the rock. For a rock to qualify as a true wishing rock, there can be no splits, no outrunners, no faint second lines on the rock. Popular lore holds that if you keep a wishing rock in your pocket (or nearby) and make wishes on it, it will help your wishes come true.

When we were printing our San Juans monograph, everyone who worked on the book oohed and aahed over this photo. The pressmen named the specimen the "Gold Sandwich," and all were contemplating taking up mineral collecting. Unfortunately this specimen is hardly a meal, it's just a tiny bite. It is nevertheless an impressive photo of a very fine little piece.// Gold in quartz, 3.75 cm wide, Idarado Mine, Telluride, San Miguel County // Benjy Kuehling collection, Jesse La Plante photo
