For the past decade, a series of community based art projects has earned wide recognition for the SMS Art Team, and fostered a strong network of support and appreciation. This school year an exciting new project called “Peace on Earth” will continue this joyful tradition. The project involves painting a mural on an exterior wall of a building owned by St. Timothy Catholic Church, right off Route 17. Biology teacher, Susan Foulk, attended The Sustainability and Nature Institute (SNI) program at University of Richmond this summer. The hands-on SNI explored the science and design behind creating a successful outdoor classroom. Participants worked to develop a plan for an outdoor classroom where students can explore opportunities for decision making, learning, social development, and establishing sustainable practices grounded in the natural world. viewbook.sms.org

Rising senior, Jane, has spent part of her summer working as a sailing instructor at the Premier Sailing School in Irvington, VA. The School is taking place at The Tides Inn Resort on the Rappahannock River - the same river that runs by our campus! Jane has been working with kids that range from beginning to advanced sailors, and over the course of summer they have sailed a variety of boats such as: Optis, Lasers, Sunfish, and J24s. viewbook.sms.org
