Do you have an “emergency” kit in your purse? If you get a food stain on your dress right before a big work meeting, can you fix it? If you start getting a gnarly, raised blister on your foot one mile into your three mile walking tour, can you fix it? What if you get to your interview and realize that in your rush to get out the door, you forgot to put makeup on and you look more like the walking dead than yourself? These aren’t big emergencies…they aren’t even real emergencies! But, if you’ve ever found yourself in one of the situations I describe above, you know that in that moment, it definitely feels pretty darn close to an actual emergency. For very little cash, you can whip up a DIY emergency kit for your handbag that can save you a lot of time and angst in the future. Here are some of the things I recommend you include: Too Faced Glamour To Go 2 Pocket Palette, $20 - This little palette contains nearly everything you need to create a quick face of makeup. Cutex Essential Care One Step Nail Polish Remover Pads, $3.19 - If you have chipped nail polish, a huge smudge on one of your fingers or are wearing a color that you feel your supervisor may not be impressed with, it’s easier to simply remove all the polish on your hands or feet rather than try and fix the problem. Conair Matte Minis Bobby Pins, $1.29 - These are useful. Trust me. Keep some around. Crayola® Nontoxic Anti-Dust Chalk, White, $0.64 - If you own and wear white clothes, a piece of chalk is necessary. Temporarily chalk out stains and bleach later. Tweezerman Slant Tweezer, Signature Red, $20 - Nothing worse than looking in the mirror and discovering your eyebrows are taking over your face. Damn you natural lighting! Speed Stick Travel Size, $1.59 - A travel size deodorant is a summer emergency kit must-have. (Especially if you commute on public transportation.) Tide to Go Instant Stain Remover, $4.91 - These little pens have saved so many of my clothes I can’t even tell you. But beware: they sometimes make stains worse! Use judiciously and remember to use from the inside of your clothes if possible. Tweezerman Dots Matchbook Files, $4 - This little box of mini nail files is perfect for an “emergency” kit because you’ll probably come across someone (a friend or coworker) who’ll need a nail file one day too. Band-Aid Advanced Healing Blister for Fingers & Toes, $1.10 - The most GENIUS of all Band-Aids. They’re truly miracle-working and have saved my feet so many times. Gorilla Glue Super Glue Bottle, $3.99 - This may seem like a weird choice, but consider the bow that fell off one of my flats as I got off the train one day, or the trim coming off a handbag. It’s not a chic fix, but a quick one…and sometimes that’s all that matters. Two’s Company - Sew Chic Patent Faux Leather Sewing Kit, $11 - A sewing kit is always great to have on hand, especially for unruly buttons or a ripped hem. Goody Ouchless Hair Elastics, $2.99 - Because you never know when you’ll need to put your hair up and the rule goes, “There’s never a hair band around when you NEED one.” Break that rule. Carry a dozen.
