The Letter. Edmund Blair Leighton (British, 1853-1922). Mr. Blair Leighton’s later works will show that he aims at getting as much variety of texture as possible on his canvas by different handling of the colours. This inevitably means a certain loss of spontaneity; but to gain one quality another must be sacrificed, and the painter has to make up his mind which is, to him, the most desirable to obtain. La Liseuse, Pre Raphaelite Art, Lecture, Woman Reading

Girl reading. Charles Chaplin (French, 1825-1881). Oil on canvas. His early works, from 1848 to 1851, are characterized by a concern for realism which had been restored to fashion by the Second Republic: he painted the landscape of the Auvergne, showing a regionalism that is found also, for example, in works by Adolphe Leleux and Armand Leleux. Chaplin soon rejected this early manner in favour of a more supple and gracious style that ensured him fame as a portrait painter. Rembrandt, Reading Art, Art Gallery
