Sylvester Stewart (March 15, 1943 – June 9, 2025), the visionary musician better known by his stage name Sly Stone, was an American musician, songwriter, and record producer who inspired generations with his role as frontman for Sly and the Family Stone, playing a critical role in the development of funk with his pioneering fusion of soul, rock, psychedelia and gospel in the 1960s and 1970s. Stone passed away at the age of 82. His family said in a statement that Stone had died of COPD and other underlying health issues.

He was known for several hits in the 1960s, including his 1966 U.S. chart-topper "Lightnin' Strikes" and 1969 UK number two hit "I'm Gonna Make You Mine".
