Bryson, and recently I gave a talk, based on the book, on how to deal with young children (ages 2-6) when they are exhibiting challenging behaviours. Dr. Daniel Siegel uses a hand brain model to expand on this concept explaining that when emotions become too big we “flip our lid”. What he means is that when our right brain emotions become too big the prefrontal cortex area (higher order rational left-brain thinking) of the brain becomes overloaded and we lose function in this area.  During this time we need to respond to children in a right-brain, sensory manner.
