Before the Automobile: Gusseted 1870's corset I really love the dip down in the center bust 1860s Corset, Corsets, Victorian Corset, Corsets Vintage, Corset Pattern, Lace Tights, Victorian Clothing, Retro Mode, Historical Costume

Because I have previously tried only the corset types with shaped panels or with a hip basque I have been very curious to give a proper gusseted Victorian corset a try. And because in my opinion 1870's was the last decade before the colorful and luxurious corsets really took over, I wanted this one to look practical and utilitarian. My project for HSF Challenge 3#: Under it All is an early Edwardian S-bend corset. I had a lot of fun making this. Usually my historical underpinnings are simple, functional items — a few tucks or a tiny touch of lace is all the embellishment I'll use. They're not meant to be seen, right? Underwear from the turn of the century was very ornate and embellished, however, so I decided to go all out on this corset. It has lace and flossing and floppy ribbon bows. I love it! I'm wearing the corset…

For better or worse, France introduced corsets in the 1550s where they spread in popularity throughout the world until the early 1900s. For better or worse, France introduced corsets in the 1550s - and they spread in popularity, throughout the world, until the early 1900's. Most often, this fashion phase emphasized a curvy figure by reducing the waist and exaggerating the bust and hips in contrast. Fashion is constantly changing, but we think corsets are best left in history. What do you think?
