Case Study House #8, the home of the power couple Charles and Ray Eames Pacific Palisades, California — 1949 Designed as part of the Case Study House Program. Initiated by Arts & Architecture magazine in 1945, the program was a response to the post-World War II housing shortage. Editor John Entenza selected a group of architects to design homes that were affordable, modern, and efficient, using wartime materials and techniques to reflect contemporary life.

‘The World of Charles & Ray Eames’ at the Barbican Art Gallery in London

A new preservation strategy for an icon of midcentury architecture.

For seating in the alcove of the Eames House, Charles and Ray designed and installed a built-in sofa, which is more efficient in terms of space planning than a stand-alone sofa. An appropriately angled vertical cushion supports a sitter’s entire upper back, a parallel lower vertical cushion for lumbar support, and a single horizontal cushion for its seat.
