British Beer

British Brown Ales have been around since the beginning of brewing history. It has been said that the malt is dried over open flames. This was prior to the kilning process that we know today. British Brown Ales were pretty popular and trended upward until the beginning of the 18th century. People were leaning toward a higher-hopped pale ale that was peaking its hoppy head around the corner. Where have we heard this before?

Ah, Brown British Beers! These are malty, nutty, toasty beers that really warm the soul. The color comes from roasted malts which give them those lovely flavors of coffee, chocolate or toasted bread. They often have low hop bitterness, allowing the malt to shine through. These easy-drinking beers are perfect for curling up next to the fire on a chilly evening, perhaps with a meat pie or some nice cheddar cheese. The smooth, mellow taste just says “comfort” to me.

Whitby Heritage Beer by the Baytown Brewery. A bit of a dark ale, a touch of dark fruits to the finish. A bit of caramel and not too hoppy. Came across this whilst on holiday in Whitby and rather liked it. Even brought some bottles back.
