Bilateral coordination is the ability to use the left and right sides of the body in a coordinated way. Sometimes we use both sides simultaneously, sometimes one is dominant and the other side helps, sometimes we coordinate the upper body with the lower body.  Crossing the midline is a key skill that helps us to see if the left and right sides of the body are integrated. Can the left hand move to the right side of the body without compensation or does the child switch hands in the middle? Well, this could be because of poor differentiation of the upper and lower body midline! 

Being able to differentiate, isolate, and have sufficient mobility between the upper and lower body is an extremely important skill in development! It is key in bilateral integration skills, core stability, and planning/sequencing movements.
