I know I mention abaca a lot on my posts, but I wanted to show you what it looks like. Abaca is a species of banana native to the Philippines. The plant is harvested for its fiber, extracted from the leaf stems. Abaca waste materials are used as organic fertilizer. During the 19th century abaca was widely used for making ships' rigging and turned into paper to make manila envelopes. Today it is used to make ropes, twines, fishing lines and nets, as well as coarse cloth for sacking.
