Hannah Hall, from Nottingham, bought a 1920s-era house in 2016 and decided to unearth its old charm, after copping a working 1940s gas cooker for £16 on eBay.

This suburban kitchen dates from the late 1940s. The area is small and compact with gas and electrical appliances, a free-standing cupboard and a pantry. The electric cooker is a 1935 model and was rented from York City Electricity Department. It was quite common to rent larger domestic appliances, as they were expensive to buy. The kitchen cupboard has a display cabinet at the top, a cutlery drawer, a drop-down work surface with storage space, and an enclosed cupboard at the bottom. This…

The 1940s were a tumultuous time. It is impossible to understand those years outside of the context of WWII. The war not only defined the decade but from a design perspective, split it virtually in half. During the first half of the decade, new design was halted, as supply shortages and rationing demanded that all available resources — material and otherwise — be directed towards the war effort…Socially, the decade featured a similar split.

Some vintage 1940s interior design decor trends veered into the overdone, like the 'glam' Hollywood-inspired look here - filled with satin, ruffles & bows.

In the mid-40s, Armstrong's lead designer, Hazel Dell Brown, seems to have favored these organized pantry corners. When closed, this one had a bird's eye view painting of a village done in a quasi-Asian style with a black background.
