Hansestadt Hamburg is the German name for the Hanseatic City of Hamburg. In the 13th and 17th centuries trading merchants created a monopoly between the Baltic Sea and Northern Europe named Hansa or the Hanseatic League, of which Hamburg was a key member. Today the original cities still retain the word Hansestadt in their official names. This banknote has the Landungsbrücken Gauge tower overlooking the St. Pauli Piers.
