Pictured is Tola Gryzgryn. This photograph was sent from the Sosnowiec ghetto to the Polanka labor camp, where her sister, Bronia Gryzgryn (now Bronia Rosmarin), was imprisoned. Tola was deported with her parents from Sosnowiec to Auschwitz, where they all perished. The Polish inscription on the photograph reads: "To my dearest sister as a memento, so that you'll never forget me - Tola; Sepember 2, 1942." Holocaust survivor Henia Bryer:  Now in her 80s, she fears younger generations lack knowledge of the Holocaust.     "I had an operation once and the anaesthetist comes and looks at [the tattoo on] my arm and he says, 'What is this?' And I said, 'That's from Auschwitz.' And he said, 'Auschwitz, what was that?' One of five metal stamps for tattooing prisoner numbers – a new item in our Collections. This is one of the most important finds in recent years. Initially, the tattoos were applied to a left breast of a prisoner. A stamp fitted with sharp needles perforated the skin, and ink was rubbed into the wounds. This is Sigmund Sobolewski. He was the 88th prisoner to enter into Auschwitz. Born to a Catholic family in Poland, Sobolewski was an officer in the Polish Army when Germany invaded the country. He would survive the initial invasion only to be arrested for his father’s anti-Nazi activities. Only 17 years old when he arrived at Auschwitz on the very first transport to the fledgling camp in June of 1940, he would spend the next four and a half years there, until the camp’s liberation in January 45. Alice Herz-Sommer, believed to be the oldest-known survivor of the Holocaust, died on Feb 23 in London at age 110, a family member said. Herz-Sommer's devotion to the piano and to her son sustained her through two years in a Nazi prison camp, and a film about her has been nominated for best short documentary at next week's Academy Awards.
